Water Damage Categories 1, 2 & 3 — What They Mean for Your Claim

Category 1, 2, and 3 water damage require completely different cleanup protocols — and your insurance adjuster knows the difference.

The IICRC Water Damage Classification System

The IICRC S500 standard classifies water damage by contamination level — not by volume or visible damage. This classification determines the cleanup protocol and what your insurance carrier will approve.

CategorySourceContamination LevelMansfield Examples
Category 1 — Clean WaterPotable supply lines, icemaker lines, toilet tankClean — poses no health riskBurst copper supply line, PEX freeze failure, dishwasher fill line
Category 2 — Gray WaterWashing machine discharge, toilet bowl overflowContaminated — may cause illnessWashing machine flood, sink overflow, AC condensate overflow
Category 3 — Black WaterSewage, rising floodwater, ground surface waterHighly contaminated — biohazardSewer backup, toilet bowl overflow with feces, storm flooding

Important: Categories can degrade over time. A Category 1 burst pipe that saturates carpet for 48+ hours becomes Category 2 or 3 as bacteria multiply. This is why the 35-minute response time matters — we classify your loss as Category 1 and preserve that classification through fast action.

Category 1 Protocol

Full extraction, structural drying, and antimicrobial application. Materials are salvageable if drying begins within 24–48 hours. Carpet can typically be saved. Insurance approval rate: high.

Category 2 & 3 Protocol

Full PPE including respirators. All porous materials in direct contact with water must be removed and disposed — they cannot be dried and reused. Non-porous materials are cleaned and disinfected.

Does the category affect how much my insurance pays?

Yes. Category 2 and 3 losses have higher material removal and disposal costs, which increases the claim value. Carriers know this and generally approve when documentation is correct.

How do I know what category my damage is?

We determine category during our initial assessment based on the contamination source, time elapsed, and material conditions. We document our determination in our first report to your adjuster.
