Can Hardwood Floors Be Saved After Water Damage?

Can Hardwood Floors Be Saved After Water Damage?

Yes — but only within a narrow window. The rule of thumb: solid hardwood extracted within 24 hours has a 70–80% save rate. Beyond 48 hours, salvage odds drop below 40%. Engineered hardwood is more forgiving — its plywood core resists cupping longer than solid wood.

The Science: Why Hardwood Buckles

When hardwood absorbs water, individual boards swell perpendicular to the grain. On a floating floor, this means the center of the room rises (cupping or crowning). On a nail-down floor, it means individual boards arch upward and pop nails. Moisture content above 14% almost always causes visible movement. The drying target is below 9% MC, matching the pre-loss equilibrium for Mansfield TX climate (typically 8–10% EMC).

How We Dry Hardwood — The Mat System

We use the Injectidry floor mat system: silicone mats seal to the floor surface, and a positive-pressure blower forces dry air under the boards from underneath. This dries from below — where the moisture is — rather than from above. Drying time: 5–10 days for solid oak or pecan, 4–7 days for engineered. We monitor with a Delmhorst pin meter daily.

Species That Dry Best

Best candidates: oak, maple, cherry (tight grain, resists cupping). Hardest to save: bamboo (laminated — delaminates quickly), wide-plank pine (absorbs more), exotic species with unknown moisture behavior.

What if my floor is cupped — is it ruined?

Cupping caused by moisture (not physical damage) often reverses during drying. We assess cupping severity at intake: mild cup (under 1/16 inch) = high reversal likelihood. Severe cup (over 1/8 inch) = may require sanding after drying.

My floor feels solid but looks discolored — is it wet?

Yes — gray or black staining on hardwood is a sign of early mold or tannin migration, both indicating moisture present. Do not walk on it until tested.
