What Does Mold Look Like After Water Damage?
Early mold — appearing 24–72 hours after water damage — often looks like dust or fuzz, not dramatic black patches. Here is how to identify it at every stage.
Early Stage (24–72 Hours)
Appearance: white or gray fuzzy patches, often mistaken for dust. Location: drywall paper, grout lines, wood framing. Smell: musty odor often comes before visible growth. Remediable without demolition at this stage in most cases.
Active Growth (3–14 Days)
Appearance: black, green, or olive patches. Texture: fuzzy, flat, or powdery. Aspergillus looks like green powder; Stachybotrys looks like slimy black patches on cellulose. Key: color alone does not indicate toxicity — testing is required for definitive ID.
Quick Visual Checklist
Check: inside cabinets below the affected area, behind baseboards, on the back face of drywall (visible after demolition), on subfloor sheathing under wet carpet, on HVAC duct boots.
No visible mold — does that mean I’m safe?
Not necessarily. Mold grows inside wall cavities and on the back of drywall. Musty smell with no visible mold is a strong indicator of hidden growth.
Do I need a formal mold test?
For insurance, a certified inspector’s report strengthens your claim. For remediation scope, we assess without a formal test in most cases.
